This interview was made with Dr. Mohamed El Snoty, a journalist at al Bawabh News and in the Investigations Section at South al Omma, and a researcher in the medical file.

In this interview, we will talk about “El Sebou” as a tradition that welcomes a new member to the house with a cheerful celebration by using a lot of tools and sweets.

So I contacted Dr. Mohamed to tell me more about this tradition. What is the history of this phenomenon, and how do we create it? He did a lot of research on this topic and wrote a lot of articles about it. He is the best person to tell us more about this topic.

Q1: Is El Sebou’ an Egyptian tradition or related to another culture?

Yes, it is an ancient pharaonic habit and ritual belonging to the Egyptians.

Q2: Do you support or oppose the continuity of this tradition? Why?

Yes, I support this tradition, as it is a delightful tradition that the Egyptian family gathers for a joyful occasion that they celebrate for a new baby.

Q3: Is the media trying to show this tradition in their content? Why?

Yes, drama and communication sites from movies and series have incorporated the El Sebou3 concept into their content.

Q4: From your point of view, what are the essential and main tools for making a simple Sebou’ like our ancients without any extras?

The basic and simple tools for making such a simple and ancient sebou’ such as copper pestles, salt, wax, beans, fenugreek, lupine, lentils, corn, rice, moghat and also some sweets and gifts.

Q5: Is Aqiqah can be instead of El Sebou’?

Aqiqah is a good Sunnah and was reported from the Prophet Muhammad, “Muhammad saws”, with authentic hadiths, and el sebou is an old habit, so people can do both or one of them according to their budget.

We can conclude that this is an ancient Egyptian tradition that spreads joy among family members while also creating a memorable experience for the child. We should save this tradition in order to make a good memory.
