Name: Mostafa Sameh Fathy

Code: 20060738

The Fortieth day of the dead, it is a habit that not only the Egyptians used to do, but also many countries in the Arab world.

Is it from religion, is it Halal or forbidden?

There are many questions and inquiries that come to our mind when thinking about this topic, so Sheikh Samir Muhammad, one of the Fatwa trustees in the Egyptian Dar Al Aftaa, answers all these questions.

Q1:

On the fortieth day when one of them died, where did this belief come from and what originated?

  • Forty Pharaoh beliefs or fads were held after forty days of embalming, after which they established condolences and appeared in Iraq, Egypt, and others, but not religious beliefs but by Pharaoh.

Q2:

What is the fortieth day in religion and legitimacy? Is it considered Halal or Haram?

  • The solace in the legitimacy is three days, so these fads enter the grief in the hearts of the solace owners and it has no usefulness.

Q3:

What should we do to make people conscious to stop doing these fads?

  • You should start by approaching them and sensitizing them that there is no something called (the fortieth day) and that these fads and myths have no religious or legal basis or usefulness. If they do not use it, leave them but reinforce the advice and convince them that the prophet Mohmed and his companions didn’t do that.

Q4:

What is the solution in society when these fads become a tradition among them?

  • It is already prevalent and widespread, especially among the people in the countryside. Still, when you start to change yourself and the advice that is around you, society will begin to change itself and the awareness among the people about this topic will increase then these fads won’t affect religion.

Q5:

What is the solution when there is a backlash or cruelty when advising?

  • Advise reasonably and calmly and try to withstand the reaction, whatever it is, because they are not aware of it, you do your duty and are responsible for giving advice. Still, their reaction is none of your business.

On a point the fortieth day when one of them died just a fad has no association with religion.
